kundalini chakras

If you feel you are in a spiritual awakening process, or possibly in a spiritual emergence or crisis, you may feel you have enough to worry about with the physical challenges that arise, or psychic shifts that are throwing you into unfamiliar territory.  But what is really important to understand in this awakening process is that it is your subtle energy field that is erupting and unraveling and producing all the changes.

            One way to frame this experience and gain some insight is to use the model common to yogis, that maps chakras (energy vortices) and nadis (flows of energy) and various other knots and points and brain centers that get involved in the transformative and evolutionary changes you are experiencing.  In this essay I will focus on the role of chakras in transformation and spiritual awakening.

            Various esoteric systems see chakras in different colors, with varied symbols, and ascribe various characteristics and talents to each. I believe the yogic science of Kundalini Tantra  is the most useful model to understand the many phenomena that arise in a spiritual awakening process. So here, in a very truncated and simplified way, are the points I find most helpful in seeing what kundalini activity is up to in any given body.

            The most significant chakras are said to be in the center of the spine but there are probably 50 chakras throughout the body and these are points where your consciousness and energy intersect, like little wheels of energy holding your invisible energy field together.

THE FOUNDATIONAL CHAKRA

            At the base of the spine is the foundational chakra, muladhara, which holds you into a sense of having a body, of being a separate person, a connection and agreeement that spirit is making with existence.  Three qualities are rooted here -- the tendency to lethargy (tamas), activity (rajas)or harmonious balance (sattva).  We each have a mix of these.  Sometimes you can see them clearly in the temperament of a new-born infant. Here also our spirit becomes identified with the limitation of time and space, and we know we are part of the earth.  Our life force is rooted here and active, because we feel we are alive and pranic energy is moving throughout our body.  Kundalini is said to be the residual energy that is stored here, holding us in stasis, unless or until it is jolted into awakening and winding upward through our bodies.

            Although kundalini arises from this point this does not mean the chakra has awakened and transformed at the time of awakening.  I don't believe this happens until the rest of the transformation is done and the system is ready to embody the spiritual sense of spacious presence that a full awakening offers. Then there may be a profound letting go into living a life of internal freedom. It feels like the ground breaks underneath you and you are standing in space.

THE SEXUAL AND PROCREATIVE CENTER

            The second chakra, swadhisthana, is related to the sexual organs -- the drive to procreate, or the desire for pleasure originates here.  This chakra is active but in many people it is out of balance, causing obsessions with sex or the opposite dynamic -- fear, frigidity, condemnation of the body or of life.  This area is believed to be the seat of all desires, and the storehouse of the collective unconscious, holding all the darker energies in the deep subconscious.  Because of this a person might become obsessed with terror or demonic images, and move through a sexual or fear crisis as kundalini moves into and amplifies this chakra.  For this reason many spiritual traditions emphasize opening or awakening chakras in the upper body first, but eventually the issues related to this area will need to be addressed. When this deep unconscious material is cleared out a person is said to be free from lust, anger and greed, to feel integrated, calm and fearless, and able to have a strong will and dedication to their spiritual life.

THE SEAT OF POWER

            The 3rd chakra, Manipura, located at or slightly below the naval, is where our sense of a personal identity lives. It is the power center, concerned with survival and accumulation.  The quality of energy here has a great impact on our digestion,  the fire and energy that moves through all our organs, and our general psychological and physical health.  When out of balance a person may be arrogant and demanding, feel driven and be overbearing.  At the opposite extreme they may feel weak, ineffectual, depressed, energy deficient and helpless.

             We have both upper and downward flowing pranic energy flows in our bodies that circulate in the 3rd chakra center andkundalini yogis believe that for good health and spiritual growth these energies need to  be rerouted to move in tandem upward through the body, so some yogic practices are designed to accomplish this. Most westerners have not had a life practice of gradually preparing to manage these energies so are subjected to random problems when the 3rd chakra awaken.

            Some people in a spiritual awakening or spiritual crisis report chronic fatigue, listlessness, and even being bedridden for a long period.  This indicates that energy has either burned out or become depleted in this area.  In my observation some of the things that might trigger this depletion are working with intense energy, breathing or meditation practices that concentrate all energy in the upper chakras;  paying little attention to the basic physical needs of the body either because ofa belief it is unimportant or because of being too busy; or psychological  issues that led to one of the two extremes identified above -- living with great forcefulness in the world, or feeling great inadequacy in the world.  

        It takes time and self-valuing to repair any damage in Manapura and yogis say a sincere spiritual commitment can also help to stabilize here.  When this chakra functions well the body will be healthy and probably long-lived.  When this chakra is fully awakened by kundalini the sense of a separate identity is seen as illusory, and there is a profound change in how the will, spiritual intuition, and intention is experienced. This is a major turning point in a spiritual awakening, and after manapura is awakened the kundalini is said to no longer fall into the lower chakras.  Sometimes benevelent psychic powers may arise when the chakra is awakened. One also begins to see beauty in the world and envision new possibilities in their life.  Biases, and prejudices fall away. It is an important time to learn to listen to the deeper intuition and become aligned with your authentic sense of expression in the world.  Old dysfunctional relationships tend to fall away. Occasionally much of a person's previous life falls away.

AWAKENING THE HEART

            The 4th chakra, Anahata, is in the center of the chest in the spine, parallel to the heart.   If we could move through life with no disappointments and no loss or grief, then our heart chakra might stay open and loving in the world, but every pain or contraction creates armoring, protectiveness and defensiveness.  The heart chakra is associated with our creativity, our love of life, appreciation of nature and other people, compassion and empathy.  To the extent these are available our heart chakra is balanced and open.  When kundalini does its transformation here we may find that life flows smoothly, what we need appears,  and we are emotionally balanced.  For many people an initial spiritual awakening is at the level of the heart, triggered by a profound love of another person or relationship with a guru.  Sometimes being in the presence of a realized person will spontaneously open and activate the heart chakra, orparadoxically, an experience of deep griefwill open us.

            During the opening of this chakra you may hear voices or sounds from other realms, hear buzzing or humming sounds and the music of a flute, and feel great sensitivity to the feelings of others. You may temporarily have clairvoyant or psychokinetic experiences, or even a capacity to heal.  You may become detached from worldly things, and find old pleasures meaningless.  As the energy is working waves of old grief might arise to be released.  You can feel unusual sensations in the heart, or have a sudden rising of unconditional love or compassion.  It can be like an emotional roller coaster for a while, but as the work here settles out there is a deep peace and internal happiness.  It is important to think positively, some yogis report, because you are likely to manifest what you think as this chakra transforms itself. Some people begin to feel that all that exists in the world is love.

AWAKENING TO THE OPPOSITES

            The 5th chakra, Vishuddhi, is in the cervical plexus behind the throat, and impacts throat, ears and hearing.  Shuddhi means to purify, but the work here goes beyond clearing because when the chakra transforms it brings one to terms with the opposites and allows consciousness to understand and accept both the light and dark aspects of life.  This brings the mind harmony, inner peace, compassion and a wise perspective. One begins to realize that all the challenging experiences of life are here to teach us.  If there are psychic intrusions the person can handle them with discrimination and not become distracted or overwhelmed.  Greater creativity, and insight into spiritual teachings, bliss and a long life are other reported benefits of awakening this chakra, as well as the occasional ability to read another person's thoughts.

            When vishuddhi is out of balance or blocked the thyroid can be damaged, and ears throat and hearing may be challenged.  It can be difficult to express thoughts and feelings. Sometimes there are random movements or periodic shaking of the neck and head. If for some reason the person has become attracted to psychic powers yogis say their energy can become stuck, and it also is blocked when one has learned to suppress their feelings and self-expression.

            This chakra is emphasized in yogas that use sound i,e, shabd and nada yoga, and can be opened through mantras, music, and chanting, especially if the person is very devotional. It is believed that people with remarkable speaking skills, or beautiful singing voices were born with vishuddhi open and active.

AJNA: THE 3RD EYE

            Ajna means to know or follow and this chakra, located between and slightly above the eyebrows, is considered the command center of the entire subtle body system.  It has been associated with the pineal gland, which evidently begins to shut down when children are 9 or 10.  

            There are many esoteric and meditation practices that emphasize putting attention on this 3rd eye, with the belief that this will purify the mind and prepare one to awaken their entire energy system with fewer problems. A series of spiritual events have been attributed to this chakra, especially flashes of great light, falling into light or bliss, visions, profound stillness, and psychic revelations. It is at this transformational opening one glimpses the unreality of the personal identity, and may feel detached from the senses.  As energy moves upward from here, thesubtle body may rise or sink into states of samadhi, and you may feel merged with the universe, or lose all consciousness of separation from the cosmos.

            However, the opening of Ajna does not mean the end of the energy process.  It generally sends energy back down through the lower chakras to further clear deep-seated conditions and toxins and to strengthen the system.  If you have done no preparatory work, and have chakras that have not yet opened fully, the entire kundalini process may activate and bring out personal and collective unconscious material.  This is one of the reasons that spiritual traditions have emphasized the need for a guru or guide to help you through this process.

A THOUSAND PETALS IN SAHASRARA

            Sahasrara chakra is likened to a thousand-petal lotus, and is located either at the top of the head or above it, depending on what tradition you follow.  Tantra sees this as symbolizing unlimited possibilitiesand the full realization of Truth -- a vast knowledge of nothing and everything, or merging with the wholeness of all.  The samadhi experience here is an ego death, a movement forever out of the mundane and limited human awareness. Perspectives of life and one's role in it are profoundly altered.  Some esoteric systems say there are numerous spiritual chakras beyond the crown which allow one to enter other dimensional experiences and relationship, but these are beyond the scope of my interest and expertise.

            As energy and conscious move into the brain there is still another level of clearing that is triggered, along with the opening of latent brain centers.  So some people report itching, crawling, burning, vibrating and other sensations in the head as energy penetrates the upper body.  A few say it is like having someone drilling in their head.  This can be a mild experience or a very intense one, and to move through it requires great detachmentand trust in the radiant and blissful potential of this process.

            Some spiritual traditionsdo not see completion in the blessing of a samadhi state, but encourage instead  an embodiment -- bringing Truth back into the body --  and learning to live from the perspective absorbed in those moments.  There are practices that bring energies back through the physical and subtle bodies, promoting a final clearing of deep unconscious material, and grounding a person into the willingness to live with the whole of life -- to be ordinary and be of service.

            There are other factors in the subtle energy system -- knots that hold attachments, small chakras that have essential roles to play, shifts in how the senses work, psychic openings, etc.  The major nadis, sushumna in the center of the spine, ida, the cooling mental energy and pingala , the heating prana energy, produce their own phenomena as they awaken and criss-cross from the tailbone and into the face.  So this is a partial and limited description of the complexities of our energy fields, which are clearly molecular structures holding the substance of our lives.

            As a non-dual teacher it is tempting to say -- just shift consciousness and wake up to the pure unbound presence that you are and you will be free.  I know there is a place within each of us that is already free, still and completely at peace.  The direct approach to awakening emphasizes the possibility of slipping into this Truth NOW, as it is always here NOW.

            But the fact is that most spiritual seekers, and many who accidentally stumble onto this path of transformation and realization without having sought it, fall into this evolutionary and chaotic awakening process eventually, and their entire body/mind/spirit is engaged.  We live in a culture that does not see this as transformation, and typically believes any behavior and experiences outside of a limited norm are evidence of illness.  So we must go clear back to very ancient teachings to find a model that validates the many phenomena of evolutionary change that we experience.


            There is a great blessing and a profoundly peaceful and joyful outcome available in this process. Perhaps in a few persons,  realization of Truth and relaxation into living in the moment is gentle and sudden and complete.  But from what I have seen over many years it is more common to move sporadically through the wild and unpredictable phenomena of our energy centers awakening, balancing and transforming themselves.  It is unique to each of us, just as puberty has its unique challenges.  It is the answer to our longing to be free.

Sun Temple at Modhera


Sun Temple at Modhera is one amongst the few shrines that are dedicated to Sun God. Read more about Sun Temple in Gujarat.

Sun Temple ModheraSun Temple at Modhera is one of the few shrines that are dedicated to the Sun God. Situated on the banks of Pushpavati River in Modhera, Sun Temple is easily accessible from Ahmedabad, the largest city of Gujarat. The nearest station to Modhera is located at Ahmedabad, which lies at a distance of 102 kms. Regular bus services are also available from Ahmedabad to Modhera. The nearest Railway station is sited at Mehsana, with a mere run of 25 kms.

In 1026, the temple was built by King Bhimdev of the Solanki dynasty (believed to be the descendants of the lineage of Sun God). This ancient temple revives the reminiscences of Sun Temple at Konark in Orissa. Turning in the pages of history, one can notice the mention of Modhera in the scriptures like Skanda Purana and Brahma Purana. The surrounding area of Modhera used to be known as Dharmaranya (forest of righteousness) and the place was blessed by Lord Rama.

Architecture
The brilliant architecture of the temple is one of its own class. The temple encompasses three different yet axially-aligned and integrated constituents. As per the Konark Temple, this shrine is designed in a manner, so that the first rays of the Sun cast on the image of the Lord Surya. The Temple was plundered by Mahmud Ghazni; still the architectural grandeur is not vanished. No matter what is left, yet the remnants provide a great enchantment to behold.

Erected on a high platform, the Temple appears majestic with its grand structure. However, the spires are out of the scene, but the 'Toranas' (Archways) that lead to the main halls overshadow the absence of spires or shikhars. The exterior walls are engraved with intricate carvings, boasting about the mastery of art in those times. Every single inch of the structure is covered with the sculptural patterns of Gods, Goddesses, birds, beasts and flowers. Actually, the Sun Temple is divided into three parts namely Surya Kund, Sabha Mandap and Guda Mandap.

Surya Kund
Surya Kund is a deep stepped tank in the front of the temple. The tank was named after the Lord Surya (Sun God). In the earlier times, this 100 sq meter rectangular tank was used to store pure water. The devotees used to take a halt here for ceremonial ablutions before moving towards the temple. Not less than 108 shrines mark the steps of this tank including the shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, Sheetala Mata and many others. In front of this tank, a huge 'torana' (archway) leads to the Sabha Mandap.

Sabha Mandap
Literally, Sabha Mandap refers to an assembly hall where religious gatherings and conferences are conducted. This hall is open from all the four sides and has 52 delicately carved pillars. The intricate carvings depict scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata (Indian Epics) and scenes from the life of Lord Krishna. In order to get into the Sanctum Sanctorum, one has to cross the passage with pillars and arches.

Guda Mandap
Guda Mandap is the sanctum sanctorum that is supported by a lotus-base plinth. Once, this hall used to house the idol of the Sun God. The designing of the hall was done in a way, so that the idol gets the first glimpse of the Sun at equinoxes. However, the idol was plundered by Mahmud Ghazni yet the walls represent the Sun God in his 12 different facets of each month. The carved walls also depict the aspects of human life like the vicious circle of birth and death. The façade of this hall was renovated in the recent years, despite the fact that the roof over the Guda Mandap had already been shattered.

Festival
Modhera dance festival is the major festival that is observed by the Sun Temple. This dance festival is organized to keep the Indian traditions and culture alive. It is held in the third week of January every year. The classical dance forms in the premises of this temple revive the imperial ambiance during the period. Gujarat Tourism organizes this event to promote tourism at this place.
There are two prominent Sun temples in India. One is Konark on the east coast in the state of Odisha. And the other in the western state of Gujarat at Modhera. In this post, I am going to explain the architecture of Sun Temple Modhera that was built in 1026 CE by King Bhimdev – a Solanki King who ruled from Patan. Solankis are a Suryavanshi dynasty. Descendants of Sun and hence a temple dedicated to Sun. This temple is a contemporary of Chola temples in South and Chandela temples in North. This was the peak of Indian temple architecture with ample examples across the country of finest sculpted architecture.

If I were to close my eyes and go back in time, I would like to go back to early 11th CE when the country would be full of lovely temples with painted walls and artists still working on giving the finishing touches to their masterpieces. When in ruins they look so enthralling. How would they be when they were all practicing temples with music and dance a part of their daily rituals? One can only imagine. Let’s look at what is left with us after Mahmud Ghazni & Allaudin Khilji’s generals tried their best to destroy the Sun temple at Modhera.

Let me explain the Architecture of Sun Temple Modhera. Modhera Sun temple has 3 main parts. The main temple with a Garbhagriha and a mandapa called Guda Mandapa, a detached Sabhamandapa, and a stepped water tank. When the temple reflects in the waters of the tank it looks mesmerizing. It’s reigning deity – the Sun helps enhance the beauty at its magic hours in the morning and evening. Just behind the temple, the river Pushpavati flows. You can see some Keerti Torans on the side of the temple. It is not a practicing temple as there is no idol left in the temple.

The temple is built using the locking system that is said to be an earthquake resistant method. As in the case of an earthquake; the structure would shake but not fall. It also sits on the tropic of cancer that passes through India. I am yet to figure out the significance of building a temple right on the tropic of cancer. Awe is the first expression you would have when you first look at the temple. I went around the temple a couple of times and then hired a guide who then explained the nuances.

The water tank or Surya Kund at Modhera’s Sun temple is a stepwell on the eastern edge of Sun temple complex facing the Sabha Mandapa. It has pyramid shaped steps forming some intriguing geometric patterns on the steps. However what makes this tank distinct from other similar temple tanks is the presence of big and small temples on its steps. On the step directly opposite the temple, a temple has Vishnu on Shesh Shaiya. There are temples dedicated to Ganesha and Shiva as Nataraja. One temple is dedicated to Shitlamata – the goddess of Chicken Pox, whose vehicle is a donkey and she holds broom in one hand and Neem leaves in another. Other temples are in various states of ruins, but they all look beautiful even now.

It is said that originally there were 108 shrines on these steps. It is difficult to count how many of them remain, but they are just simply beautiful. The geometry of the formations is breathtaking.

According to literature, the steps of Surya Kund are a stylized mirror image of the Shikhara that unfortunately no longer exists. Symbolically it brought together the fire and the water.

Turtles still live in the waters of this tank. This tank is also called Ramakund for the legend of Rama associated with the place.

Sabhamandapa at Sun Temple, Modhera


Sabhamandapa is a diagonally arranged octagonal hall that welcomes you with its exquisite toran. Its best feature is it’s magnificent carved pillars carrying Torana arches in alternate triangular and semi- circular designs. Literature tells me there are 52 pillars denoting the 52 weeks in a solar year. The heavily carved pillars have scenes from Ramayana, Mahabharata & Krishna Leela. Some of the scenes that I remember is Sita in Ashok Vatika in Sri Lanka, Vanar Sena with stones in their hands to make the bridge, Krishna with Govardhan Parvat on his finger tip and Arjuna with his bow in Draupadi’s Swayamvar. There are Vishkanya’s doing their makeup.




This hall was used for public functions – religious or otherwise like councils, performances or public meetings.

The Sun temple is so designed that on the days of equinoxes i.e. 21st March and 21st September, the first rays of sun fall on the idol of Sun in Garbhagriha. Is this not an engineering wonder too then? The main sun temple is on a plinth that is designed like an inverted lotus. Remember lotus is a flower that responds to the sun rays and lives only for the time sun rays are there. On top of lotus petals is a panel carved with Elephants called Gaj-petika. Above these the entire life cycle of a human being is carved; starting right from the time a human being is conceived with an act of intercourse to the death depicted with last rites. There are other erotic figures as well on the exterior as was the norm in the temples of that era.

There are sculptures of people playing various musical instruments. Above these flora/fauna/life are deities. There are 12 idols of Parvati in her various forms called Dwadash Gauri. There are 12 idols of Sun as if he is all pervading. Some idols of Sun are in Irani Style with Gumboots and a long cap. As per the guide, this is because the sun worship started in Iran.

East – Indra or lord of Rains
South-East – Agni or lord of Fire
South – Yama, God of death
South-West – Nairiti – a form of Shiva

North-West – Vayu or Lord of Air

Plundering
It is said that the main idol was made of pure gold and depicted sun sitting on his chariot with 7 horses with his Sarathi Arun driving the chariot. The idol sat on a deep plinth that was again filled with gold coins. Today, all you can see is the deep pit in Garbhagriha that tells the tale of plundering. It is said that the diamonds on the idol could lit the whole temple. All this is oral history and no one knows where the idol is. Some say that when the attacks were made on the temples, some Brahmin families hid the idols with them and saved it. Based on what I read and heard, whereabouts of this idol are not known. There is a closed underground path that potentially links the temple to Patan, the capital city of Solankis.

Garbhagriha has a circumambulation path and is attached to an octagonal Guda mandapa. Guda mandapa is embellished with niche images of twelve Aditya’s – showing different aspects of the Sun – probably representing each Solar month.

The Shikhara or the superstructure is missing so the temple now looks flatter than it should be.

According to Skanda Purana and Brahma Purana, it is said that when Ram was coming back from Sri Lanka after killing Ravana, he wanted to do absolve himself of the sin of killing a Brahmin – remember Ravana was a Brahmin. He asked Vashishth Muni to show him a place where he can do the same and the sage pointed him to Dharmaranya – or the forest of the Dharma. Rama performed his Yagna here and established a village called Sitapur. Sitapur is the village that came to be known as Modhera later, which actually translates to a mound of the dead, probably because this place has seen layers of civilization, one upon the other. Another legend says this Modhera got its name from Modh community of Brahmins who helped Rama perform his yagna here.

Sun is the reason for the our existence in this universe. So, sun is very important in vedic astrology. Sun is the king of all planets. The major significations of sun are as follows:
Soul(sun represents our soul)
Father
Government and relationship with government
Authority
Confidence and Ego
Personality(one element of our personality)
Career and fame
Strenght and vitality(health)
Politics
Self esteem
Sun is the karaka(significator) of the 1st, 9th and the 10th houses. Even though sun is considered as a malefic planet, it is a satwik planet which means pure. If sun is weak in a birth chart then all the above mentioned significations can suffer and the opposite if it is strong. Sunrules the sign of leo and so whichever house leo is present is ruled by the sun. Sun is debilitated in libra and exhalted in aries. The friendly planets to the sun are Jupiter, Mars and Moon. Venus and Saturn are inimical towards the Sun and Mercury is neutral. As far as the houses are concerned 10th house is its stongest position whereas 4th and 7th houses are weak positions. 12th house is a marana karka sthan for the sun meaning that a place where a planet goes to die and so becomes a little weak there too. Which ever sun is placed, that house becomes an important focus point in a persons life. Sun's position also shows where our ego lies. For example, if sun is in the 7th house then that shows that the ego lies in the life partner or relationships of that person. Sun also brightens the house it sits and enables us to see what is happening in that house or things related to that house. Sun does well in malefic houses because it burns the malefic aspects of that house.
Sun burns some the qualities of the house that it sits in and also the planet which is combust (conjunct sun). But the conjunction must take place within 6 degrees otherwise sun brightens the quality of the planet it sits with(6 degrees to 15 degree difference). If the conjunction takes place when the planets are more than 15 degrees apart, it will be too light to give results. The only exception is mercury where





it does not really get combust because in the solar system it can be seen that mercury is closest to the sun. As mercury is alway hot due to being near the sun, a conjunction within 1 degree of sun and mercury will be required to burn some qualities of mercury. Some people think combustion can completely destroy a planet but combustion can only take away a very small amount of strength and in some cases it's even negligible.
 Sun is having only one aspect which is towards the 7th from its position. Sun gives authority, responsibility and direction towards that house or planet. For example: sun aspecting 5th house can give authority, responsibility and clear direcion towards their children.

The Sun in Hindu Mythology
The Sun God is the source of all life and energy that exist in the universe. In hindu mythological, the abode of Sun god is known as Suryaloka, and this sphere is next to the physical world or bhu-mandala. Sage Kashyap and his wife Aditi gave birth to Indra, Visnu, Vivasvan, Miter, Amsuman, Dhata Tvasta, Pusa, Varuna, Aryama, Bhaga and Savita. These twelve sons of Aditi become know as twelve Adityas. Lord Bramha selected Savita from theses twelve Adityas and blessed him by saying only he will be worshiped and all other Adityas will be merged in him. But these twelve Aditayas exerts their force separately which gave rise to twelve months and each of them are said to rule over the each of the twelve months. As a result of this, we have different seasons and climatic changes.

The Sun god's wife Sanjana was the daughter of Vishvakarma, the celestial architect. They had three children Vaivasvata, Yama (the god of death) and Yami. Sanjana was having tough time with Sun, not because of any discord between them but as Sun's light was too strong for her. One day Sanjana decided to go away from home, leaving in her place her body double, Chaaya (shadow). For some time, Sandhya lived with her father and then left it too, she took the form of a mare and went to the mountains to pray. Meanwhile, the Sun being unknown of this fact, continued to live with Chaaya and she gave birth to three more children, Savarni, Shani (later became the planet Saturn) and Taapti (later became a river). After passage of some more time Sun realized that Chaaya was not his wife and he went to look for her. He saw his wife praying in the form of a mare and he turned himself into a horse and approached her amorously. This led to the birth of horse headed twins, Ashwini Kumara, the celestial physicians. Sanjana told her husband that his light was too strong for her. Sun then decided to divide his light in to sixteen parts, each of which created different planets including Earth, while the Sun was left with one-sixteenth part of his original light and Sanjana came back to live with Sun.

The Sun's chariot is driven by Arun and have seven horses pulling the chariot, known as Gayatri, Brhati, Usnik, Jagati, Tristup, Anustup and Pankti. These seven horses are metaphorically speaking are the seven colors which the Sunlight consists of and know as 'VIBGYOR'. A powerful race of hindu kings are supposed to be the direct descendant of Sun god. This dynasty know as Suryavanshi, first king of this dynasty was Iskwakoo and later incarnation of Vishnu, Lord Rama was born in this dynasty. Surya (the Sun)

Externally, Surya signifies those people or relationships in our life that are strongly related to royalty, power and the identity of the society. These are presidents, leaders, and directors. Since the Sun is at the center of the solar system, controlling the orbit of all the other grahas, it governs people with power or authority. On a smaller scale, this could be a governor, mayor, and in the family environment, the father. Surya represents those buildings that reflect power and dignity, such as temples, mansions and palaces. Physically, Surya rules the aspects of the body that are most dominant in terms of control (the brain), the maintenance of life (heart) and maintaining the shape (bones). Surya rules the right eye. Thirunageswaram temple(Praying to Rahu )

                This temple is considered most sanctified by its presiding deity (Moorthy) location (sthalam) and sacred water (theertham), and most benevolent because Saiva saints Thirugnana sambanda Swamigal, Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal and Thiru Sundaramoorthy Swamigal have sung in praise of lord siva here, besides being the most worshipful place of legendary fame Saiva saint Sri Sekkizar swamigal who brought out the sacred Saiva text 'Peria Puranam'. This place is one of the 127 worthy places of divine worship spread over the southern bank of River Cauveri.

       Among the nine worship places, for the nine planets, Thirunageswaram is the place where Raaghu Bagavan is obviously active to bestow his grace. Here Raaghu Bagavan can be seen with his two consorts Nagavalli and Nagakanni together, prayers for fulfillment of desires at this shrine are favorably answered with success. This temple is one where Lord Siva was worshipped by Raaghu Bagavan and got relived of a curse.

       Thirunageswaram temple is 6kms from Kumbakonam on the Kumbakonam - Karaikal bus route and by train, there is Thirunageswaram Railway Station between Mailaduthurai and Kumbakonam and the temple is 1km.on the south.

       Poudiga Purana contains the fact that Lord siva once told his consort Umadevi about Shenbagaraniyam, now called Thirunageswaram and its renown.

       At Shenbagaraniyam, under the Shenbagam tree Lord Siva known as Shenbagarane Eswara was gracefully giving bless to devotees. It is here that Nandi (Bull as Lord's mode of conveyance) worshipped the Lord and attained the status as Nandeesan, so too Vinayaga (Lord's first son) the status of Head of Ganas (Lord's worshipful lot of servants). Indira (King of Devas) worshipped Goddess Girigujambal (one adnored with heightened breasts) with Punugu (a rare scent variety) and got relieved of the bad smell emanating from all over his body. Sages Gowthama, Vashista, Parasarar, and Kings Nala, Pandavas and Bageerathan obtained relief after worshipping Sri Naganatha Swami here. Kings of Snakes Aadisesha, Thakshagan and Karkotagan worshipped the Lord here and got blessed.
Thirunageshwaram is one of the 127 temples on the southern banks of river Cauvery. It is one of the Panchakrosa Sthalas. The presiding Deity is Arulmigu Giri Gujambika Sametha Naganathaswamy. The Raaghu Sannathi (Nagaraja Shrine) is on the South-West direction of the second prakara. ThiruJnana Sambandar, Thiru navukarasu Nayanar, ThiruSundramoorthi Nayanar, and Arunagiri Swamigal have praised the glory of the Lord. The Thirunagechurappuranam which was written by Singaravelu pillai contains sufficient information about the temple. The Chola KingKandaraathithya (950AD-957AD) changed it into a granite edifice. The inner Mantapa was built by Seikkizhar, as it was a favourite place to him. Govinda Dikshitar (17th century A.D.) a minister to Acchuthappa nayak, constructed the outer mantapa. Sambumali, a King built the beautifulSurya Puskarani beautifully. The roof and other renovation work were done by Arimalazham Annamalai Chettiar. Gnaniyar Swamigal, the great saiva scholar, who was the pontiff at the Mutt at Thiruppapuliyur, was born here
Siva , hence this place is named ‘Thirunageshwaram’. Further Raaghu had received a boon from Siva for bestowing grace and prosperity to those who worship Him with devotion. He took His abode as God with His two consorts. As per the Sthalapuranam, there are two Shrines (Sannidhis) for the Presiding Deity (Moorthi)
1. Naganatha Shrine
2. Arthanareeswara Shrine
There are two Shrines for the Goddess also.
1. Piraiyanivanudalumai Shrine
2. GiriGujambika Shrine
The Jothisha Sastra (Astrololgy) states that if Raaghu is in good position in one’s horoscope He will bestow all prosperity (including Raja Yoga) to him and that person becomes a Kubera . If he is not in a good position and guilty (Dhosha) a person gets worst results and his life will be miserable. Therefore one should satisfy Raaghu (one of the 9 planets) by worshipping Him. One’s marriage will be delayed if Raaghu is in the 7th place in a horoscope. If he is in the 5th place, the Jaathaka (person) will not beget a child. In order to nullify Kalasthra dhosha, Naga dhosa and Putra dhosha one should worship Raaghu. People afflicted with Nagadhosa should perform oblations.
Sculpture :
There are some ancient sculptures in the Mantapas. The horse and lion figures on the pillars, Adhikaranandi, Seikkilar,Balaravoyar,his brother and their mother, Sambandar, Appar, Sundarar, Manikkavasagar, Bairava, Nataraja, and others are very beautiful. The thousand pillared mantapa is designed like a chariot having artistic stone wheels.

Thirumal, Brahma, Indra, Surya, Chandra, (Devas), Gautama, Markanteya, Parasara, (saints), Nala, Bageeratha, Chandravarma, andSambumali (Kings) worshipped and got rid of their afflictions.
There is a separate shrine to Goddess Girigujambika. Lakshimi and Saraswathi are standing on either side of Her. There is no daily Abhiseka(oblation) to the Goddess, as it is a stucco Indra was cursed by Gautama Rishi. He got deliverance by worshipping the Goddess by adorning Her with civet. From that day onwards the Goddess has been bedecked with unguent, especially civet (punugu) in a particular day once in a year.
The milk poured (Abhiseka) to Raaghu changes into light blue color.

Poojas and Festivals:
Five kala poojas (5times worship) are being done everyday. Special Abhisekas are performed between 4.30 to 6 p.m. (Raaghu Kala) in all Sundays.
Tirunageswaram,Raaghu is the king of snakes and since he worshiped lord shiva the place was named as Thirunageshwaram. This temple is situated 6kms away from kumbakonam
Offering worship at (Nageswarar temple) in the morning, at noon and at in the evening on a given day is considered to be of special significance.
Legend has it that the mythological serpents Aadi Seshan, Dakshan and Kaarkotakan worshipped Shiva here. Legend also has it that Nala worshipped Shiva here as in Gowtama muni, Paraasarar and Bhageerata are also associated with legends related to this temple.The king of the nagas, Rahu prayed to Lord Siva and hence this place got the name Thirunageswaram. Here Rahu Bhagavan has manifested with both his consorts. At this sthala, the colour of milk changes from white to blue during Abhishekam. On 16.2.86, a snake had shed off its outer skin on Rahu Bhagavan, which is preserved and worshipped to date.
The abode of Uppiliappan, which is also hailed as ‘South Tirupathi’, is situated very close to this temple. Of the 127 temples located to the South of river Cauvery, this temple is amongst the most prominent.
Suryan, Vinayagar, Gautamar, Nalan, Parasarar, Pandavas, Vasishtar, Indran, Brahma, Bageerathan, Chandrasenan, Adiseshan, Kakkan Karkodagan, Sounagar, Nargunan have prayed and benefited at this sthala.
King Sambumali who had incurred the wrath of sage Kaalangiri, attained moksha after bathing in the temple tank and praying to the Lord and Ambal of this temple.
The devas and asuras churned the Paarkadal to obtain amirtham that would free them from death, keeping them alive for ever. When the amirtham emerged, Lord Vishnu in the guise of Mohini was distributing the amirtham only to the devas. He was worried that the evil deeds of the asuras will increase multifold if they consumed amirtham. Realising this, one of the asuras with the help of the asura guru Sukrachariyar, took the form of a deva and consumed the nectar. Suryan and Chandran who noticed this, complained to Lord Narayana. In anger, Lord Narayana hit the asura on the head with the spoon in his hand. The head was cut off and fell on the ground. But because the asura had consumed amirtham, his head and body continued to live. The body of a snake got attached to the head to become Rahu Bhagavan. Rahu prayed to Lord Vishnu (Narayana) and got the position of a Sayagraham. Rahu takes his revenge on Suryan and Chandran, whenever he gets a chance by devouring them. This is commonly called as eclipse.
Relief From Doshams:
Rahu is the source of plenty. Kalathra dosham, puthira dosham, communicable diseases, mental disorders, leprosy, fall in grace are caused by Rahu dosham.
Praying to Rahu at this sthala helps rids a person from these factors and also saves the person from all poisonous life forms. Trips to holy places, Gnanamarkam are his beneficial aspects.

The annual Bhramotsavam is observed in the month of Kartikai while the Sekkizhaar festival is celebrated in the month of Vaikasi.
